CHICAGO (AP) β After two days, the first upheld protest in nearly 30 years and another rain storm in the Windy City, the Chicago Cubs finally completed a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants in a suspended game. Anthony Rizzo’s two-run homer Tuesday held up as the team’s played the final 4 1/2 innings of a game the Cubs thought they had won 2-0 two nights ago. The Giants won the nightcap.
BOSTON (AP) β Los Angeles Angels pitcher Matt Shoemaker lost his bid for a no-hitter with two outs in the seventh inning on a double by Will Middlebrooks of the Boston Red Sox. The Angels won 2-0 on a combined one-hitter to increase their lead in the AL West to two games over idle Oakland.
BOSTON (AP) β The L.A. Angels are going to be without Garrett Richards for their playoff run. The 13-game winner sustained a serious knee injury, tearing his left patellar tendon Wednesday against the Boston Red Sox in a serious blow to the Angels, who also lost starter Tyler Skaggs to Tommy John surgery earlier this season.
PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) β With no guarantee of playing beyond this week, Bo Van Pelt opened with three straight birdies Thursday and chipped in for eagle late in his round for a 6-under 65 that gave him a one-shot lead over Cameron Tringale at the Barclays, the opener of the FedEx Cup playoffs. Van Pelt is No. 104 in the FedEx Cup race. Only the top 100 advance to the next tournament.
