WASHINGTON (AP) β The Washington Nationals’ 10-game winning streak is over. Rookie Joe Panik went 4-for-5 and hit his first major league home run, a three-run shot, and Buster Posey added his 15th homer in the San Francisco Giants’ 10-3 victory of the NL East-leading Nationals.
BOSTON (AP)β The Seattle Mariners shocked Boston with five runs in the ninth inning to hand the last-place Red Sox their sixth straight loss, 5-3. Austin Jackson’s bases-loaded double with two outs in the ninth keyed the five-run rally as Seattle ended a nine-game losing streak at Fenway Park.
PHILADELPHIA (AP) β The Philadelphia Phillies nipped St. Louis 5-4 as Cards pitcher Adam Wainwright’s August struggles continued. Wainwright failed in his bid to become the majors’ first 16-game winning, giving up five runs in six innings, dropping to 15-8 overall and 2-3 this month.
PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) β Adam Scott and Cameron Tringale start third round play tied for the lead at The Barclays, the opener of the four-event PGA Tour playoffs. But 36 golfers are within five shots of the lead, including PGA and British Open champion Rory McIlroy, who is six shots back after his 6-under 65 yesterday.
BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP) β Kevin Harvick will start from the pole in tonight’s NASCAR Sprint Cup race at the high-banked half-mile Bristol Motor Speedway. Jeff Gordon, the season points leader, will start outside the front row, with Carl Edwards and Kyle Busch on the second row.
