Giants hit the Panik button, end Nats streak at 10…Angels’ lead cut to 1

UNDATED (AP) β€” The San Francisco Giants emphatically have ended the Washington Nationals’ 10-game winning streak, 10-3. Rookie Joe Panik went 4-for-5 and hit his first major league home run, a three-run shot. Buster Posey added his 15th of the season.

Tim Hudson evened his record at 9-9. He has beaten the Washington franchise 18 times. Hudson outpitched Doug Fister, who fell to 12-4. The Giants have won five of their last six.

Nationals manager Matt Williams called the game “kind of a clunker all around.”

The Nationals’ 10-game streak tied for the longest since the team moved from Montreal in 2005. During the streak, Washington had seven one-run victories, five come-from-behind wins and five walk-offs. Only Washington and Kansas City have managed 10-game win streaks this year.

In other MLB action:

β€” Oakland downed the L.A. Angels 5-3, moving within one game of the AL West leaders. That ends the Angels four-game win streak. Athletics ace Sonny Gray went eight and a-third innings to improve to 13-7. Mike Trout hit his 28th homer for the Angels.

β€” Austin Jackson’s bases-loaded double with two outs in the ninth inning keyed a five-run rally, and the Seattle Mariners sent the Boston Red Sox to their sixth straight loss, 5-3. The Mariners had managed only two hits through the first eight innings, but came alive in the ninth. Seattle ended a nine-game losing streak at Fenway Park.

β€” The Philadelphia Phillies nipped St. Louis 5-4 as Cards pitcher Adam Wainwright’s August struggles continued. Wainwright failed in his bid to become the majors’ first 16-game winning, giving up five runs in six innings, dropping to 15-8 overall and 2-3 this month.

β€” Justin Upton’s two-run homer in the 12th inning gave Atlanta a 3-1 win over Cincinnati. That’s his 25th homer. Braves starter Mike Minor didn’t allow a hit until Billy Hamilton’s two-out single in the eighth. The Reds managed just two hits — both by Hamilton — in 12 innings.

β€” Billy Butler and Josh Willingham homered in Kansas City’s 6-3 win at Texas. Rookie right-hander Yordano Ventura struck out six in six innings for his 10th win.

β€” The L.A. Dodgers beat the New York Mets 6-2. Dan Haren held the Mets to three hits over seven innings to win his 11th game.

β€” Giancarlo Stanton had three hits and drove in three runs in Miami’s 13-4 win over Colorado. Marcell Ozuna hit a grand slam for his third homer in as many games.

β€” Arizona downed San Diego 5-1. Josh Collmenter came two outs away from a complete game, holding the San Diego Padres without an earned run on four hits over 8 1-3 innings.

β€” Minnesota enjoyed a 20-6 laugher over Detroit. Eduardo Escobar got a career-high five hits, including a homer and a triple. The 20 runs are the most in the majors this year.

β€” Pittsburgh knocked off Milwaukee 8-3. Josh Harrison homered and drove in a career-high five runs. Andrew McCutchen also went deep.

β€” Tampa Bay blanked Toronto 8-0. Drew Smyly pitched a two-hitter and retired the final 19 batters for the first complete game of his career.

β€” The New York Yankees scored in the bottom of the ninth on Martin (marh-TEEN’) Prado’s RBI single to beat the Chicago White Sox 5-4. Rookie Jose Abreu (uh-BRAY’-oo) hit his 33rd homer for the White Sox.

Jon Singleton’s homer capped a four-run ninth inning and the Houston Astros took advantage of Cleveland’s sloppy defense to defeat the Indians 5-1. The Tribe had beaten the Astros six straight times.

β€” Jake Arrietta (her-ee-EHT’-uh) shut down his former team on four hits over seven innings in the Cubs 4-1 win over Baltimore. Javier Baez (BY’-ehz) and Luis Valbuena (vahl-BWAY’-nah) homered for the Cubs, who snapped the Orioles four-game winning streak. Nelson Cruz belted his major league-leading 34th homer of the season for the AL East-leading Orioles.

NBA-TRADE

Love to Cleveland and more

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) β€” The reported Minnesota-Cleveland NBA trade that would bring Kevin Love to Cleveland and send the last two No. 1 picks in the NBA draft to the Timberwolves has taken on a new look. A person with knowledge of the situation told The Associated Press that the Timberwolves will receive Philadelphia 76ers power forward Thaddeus Young as part of the new three-team deal.

The Wolves agreed weeks ago to send Love to Cleveland for No. 1 overall draft pick Andrew Wiggins, former No. 1 pick Anthony Bennett and a 2015 No. 1 draft choice they obtained from Miami.

The deal now includes the Sixers, who will get guard Alexey Shved (sh-VEHD’) and forward Luc Mbah a Moute (BAH’-ah MOO’-tay) along with that Miami No. 1 pick.

When Wiggins is moved from the Cavs to the Timberwolves in the deal, he will become just the second No. 1 overall draft pick to be traded without playing a game for the team that drafted him since the ABA and NBA merged in 1976. Chris Webber went from the Magic to the Warriors in 1993 for a package that included Penny Hardaway.

BASKETBALL-TEAM USA

Rose in, Lillard out for US basketball roster

NEW YORK (AP) β€” The U.S. national basketball team has kept Derrick Rose and cut Damian Lillard and three others, getting its roster down to 12 before the FIBA World Cup of Basketball.

Kyle Korver, Gordon Hayward and Chandler Parsons also were cut early Saturday morning, shortly after the Americans beat Puerto Rico 112-86 in their final exhibition game before leaving for Spain.

Team officials had previously said they might bring more than 12 players on the trip, but coach Mike Krzyzewski (shuh-SHEF’-skee) said after the game he wanted to get down to 12, the maximum allowable for the World Cup rosters.

Rose was expected to make the team if he was healthy enough after missing most of the last two seasons following two knee surgeries.

The rest of the roster is: Stephen Curry, Anthony Davis, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, DeMarcus Cousins, Klay Thompson, Andre Drummond, Rudy Gay, DeMar DeRozan, Kenneth Faried and Mason Plumlee.

Manziel fined…Smith wins Jets QB job

UNDATED (AP) β€” Cleveland backup quarterback Johnny Manziel (man-ZEHL’) has been fined $12,000 by the NFL for flipping his middle finger at Washington’s sideline in a game this week, a person familiar with the penalty has told the Associated Press.

Manziel said he was reacting to taunting by the Redskins during Monday night’s nationally televised game. The action didn’t help his chances to win Cleveland’s starting job, which went to veteran Brian Hoyer.

In other NFL news:

β€” Coach Rex Ryan saw enough to finally reveal the New York Jets’ worst-kept secret. Geno Smith β€” and not Michael Vick β€” will be the team’s starting quarterback this season.

β€” San Diego Chargers linebacker Manti Te’o (MAN’-ty TAY’-oh) will miss Sunday’s preseason game against San Francisco with a sprained foot.

The paper’s editorial board has announced that it will refrain from using the term that it says “unquestionably offends not only many Native Americans but many other Americans, too.”

The board operates independently of the paper’s newsgathering operation. The Post will continue to use “Redskins” in the news and sports sections.

Redskins owner Dan Snyder has vowed never to change the name, saying it honors Native Americans.
