NASCAR-BRISTOL

Logano wins under the lights

BRISTOL, Tenn. (AP)β€” Joey Logano surged past Matt Kenseth with 44 laps to go and won for the first time in his career at Bristol Motor Speedway. That foiled Kenseth’s gambling attempt to secure a spot in NASCAR’s playoffs.

Logano became the fifth driver this season to win three times. He joined the Hendrick Motorsports trio of Jeff Gordon, Jimmie Johnson and Dale Earnhardt Jr. and teammate Brad Keselowski, who finished second. Kenseth wound up third.

Jeff Gordon remained the points leader despite a 16th-place run. He’s 27 clear of Dale Earnhardt Jr. and 42 ahead of Keselowski.

INDYCAR-SONOMA

Power on pole for Sonoma race

SONOMA, Calif. (AP) β€” Will Power won the IndyCar pole at Sonoma Raceway on Saturday, putting the overall points leader in prime position for his championship chase.

Power turned a lap in 1 minute, 17.4126 seconds on the winding course at the base of wine country. He’ll start in front Sunday when he attempts to win the race for the fourth time in five years.

Power goes into the weekend with a 39-point lead over teammate Helio Castorneves (EHL’-ee-oh kas-troh-NAY’-vehs) with just two races left in the season. Power has three wins in the last four years on the 2.4-mile road course.

FORMULA ONE-BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Rosberg takes the pole

SPA, Belgium (AP) β€” Nico Rosberg will start Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix from pole position after holding off a strong challenge from his Mercedes teammate Lewis Hamilton. Four-time defending F1 champion Sebastian Vettel was the third-fastest qualifier.

Nats rough up Lincecum, again…Athletics move into first place tie

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Washington Nationals, who had their team record-tying 10-game losing streak halted Friday night, got back into the win column Saturday with a 6-2 win over the San Francisco Giants. Jordan Zimmermann improved to 9-5 with eight strong innings. He allowed a two-run home run to Hunter Pence in the first inning, then shut down the Giants. Zimmermann and Matt Thornton combined on a nine-hitter.

The Nats hit Tim Lincecum (LIHN’-sih-kuhm) hard. He allowed six runs, four earned, in two and two-thirds innings. He’s 10-9. In his last seven starts against Washington, Lincecum is 0-6 and has permitted 34 earned runs in 32 2-3 innings.

Asdrubal Cabrera (ahs-DROO’-buhl kah-BREHR’-uh) homered for the Nats, who have the best record in the NL at 74-54.

β€” Oakland nipped the L.A. Angels 2-1 to climb into a first place tie in the AL West. Coco Crisp scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on a wild pitch from Joe Smith.

β€” Jeremy Guthrie gave up a home run on his first pitch and not much else, pitching the Kansas City Royals past the Texas Rangers 6-3 for their 24th win in 30 games. Alex Gordon hit his 15th homer for the Al Central leaders.

β€” Mike Leake (LEEK) pitched into the seventh inning and boosted Cincinnati’s struggling offense by hitting a double and scoring the only run as the Reds ended a seven-game losing streak by beating the Atlanta Braves 1-0.

β€” St. Louis nipped Philadelphia 6-5 in 11 innings. Matt Carpenter hit a sacrifice fly in the 12th for the go-ahead run. The victory moves the Cards within a game of NL Central-leading Milwaukee.

β€” Pedro Alvarez homered twice to break out of a 5-for-34 slump, and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers 10-2. The Pirates beat Wily Peralta (WIH’-lee peh-RAHL’-tah), who fell to 15-8.

β€” The NL West-leading L.A. Dodgers beat the New York Mets 7-4. Adrian Gonzalez tied a season best with five RBIs, including a go-ahead, three-run homer.

β€” Arizona beat San Diego 5-2. Didi Gregorius hit a three-run homer in the eighth for the go-ahead runs.

β€” Colorado needed 13 innings to beat Miami 5-4. Corey Dickerson hit his 19th homer and drove in the winning run in the 13th with a single.

β€” Rookie Jose Ramirez’s ninth-inning single lifted the Cleveland Indians to a 3-2 win over Houston.

β€” The Chicago Cubs beat AL East leader Baltimore for the second straight day, 7-2. Chris Coghlan hit a bases-loaded triple in a four-run second inning. Chicago will try Sunday for its first series sweep since winning three straight at Boston from June 30 to July 2.

β€” The Yankees stopped the White Sox 5-3. Starter Hiroki Kuroda (heer OH’-kee kur-OH’-duh) went six innings allowing two runs and striking out six to get the win.

β€” Kennys Vargas drove in a career-high five runs, Joe Mauer (MAW’-ur) had three RBIs and Yohan Pino (PEEN’-oh) won his first start in more than a month as the Twins beat the Detroit Tigers 12-4 in the first game of a day-night doubleheader. The Tigers won the nightcap, 8-6 as Jason Verlander evened his mark at 11-11.

β€” Jose Reyes (RAY’-uhs) singled home the winning run in the 10th inning as the Blue Jays beat Tampa Bay 5-4. The Rays played the game under protest as manager Joe Maddon protested the game in the fourth inning after umpires granted Toronto a replay challenge once the next play had begun.

β€” Dustin Ackley’s three-run homer capped a seven-run fourth inning in Seattle’s 7-3 win over the Red Sox in Boston. The loss is Boston’s seventh straight while the Mariners have won nine of 12.

Tribe gets Gimenez from Rangers

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Cleveland Indians have acquired catcher Chris Gimenez from the Texas Rangers for future considerations. Gimenez is expected to join the Indians on Sunday.

Gimenez batted .262 in 34 games with the Rangers before being designated for assignment on Aug. 7. He was assigned to Triple-A Round Rock after being taken off the Rangers’ roster.

The 31-year-old Gimenez was drafted by Cleveland in 2004 and spent parts of the 2009 and 2010 seasons with the Indians

β€” Baltimore third baseman Manny Machado (muh-CHAH’-doh) will have season-ending surgery on his ailing right knee. Machado had a similar injury to the other knee last year, when he missed the final week of the season. He then had surgery and didn’t play in a regular-season game this year until May 1.

β€” The Washington Nationals have selected the contract of outfielder Nate Schierholtz (SHEER’-hohltz) from Triple-A Syracuse and optioned outfielder Michael Taylor to their top farm club. The 30-year-old Schierholtz is a .254 career hitter with 51 home runs.

β€” Catcher Yan Gomes of the Indians has been placed on the seven-day concussion disabled list. He was hit in the mask during a game Thursday. Roberto Perez will fill in for Gomes behind the plate.

The Boston Red Sox signed Cuban outfielder Rusney Castillo to a seven-year contract Saturday that begins immediately. Several reports indicated the deal is worth $72.5 million.

β€” The New York Yankees have retired four-time World Series champion manager Joe Torre’s No. 6. He is the 17th person to have his number retired by the most successful franchise in baseball history.

Rams’ QB Bradford hurts knee again

CLEVELAND (AP) β€” St. Louis starting quarterback Sam Bradford reinjured his surgically repaired left knee in the first quarter against the Browns on Saturday night. The Rams had four other starters hurt in the first half.

Bradford, who missed the Rams’ final nine games last season after having a torn left anterior cruciate ligament repaired, went down after being pressured and hit high by defensive lineman Armonty Bryant.

Bradford missed the final nine games last season after surgery to repair a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

In Denver, Broncos receiver Wes Welker was evaluated for a possible concussion after taking a hit to the head from Houston defensive back D.J. Swearinger in a preseason game.

FOOTBALL-ARENA BOWL

Rattlers win third straight title

CLEVELAND (AP) β€” Nick Davila threw for 237 yards and eight touchdowns and the Arizona Rattlers won their third consecutive ArenaBowl title with a 72-32 victory over the Cleveland Gladiators on Saturday night.

The Rattlers tied the Tampa Bay Storm with their fifth Arena title.

Cavs, Sixers and Timberwolves complete major deal

CLEVELAND (AP) β€” The highly publicized trade of Kevin Love to the Cleveland Cavaliers has taken place. The final deal included the Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers and Philadelphia 76ers.

Love, arguably the game’s best power forward, is headed from Minnesota to Cleveland, where he will join LeBron James and instantly make the Cavs an NBA title favorite.

The Timberwolves are getting No. 1 overall pick Andrew Wiggins and former top pick Anthony Bennett from Cleveland and veteran forward Thaddeus Young from Philadelphia.

The 76ers get a 2015 first-round draft choice from Cleveland, and guard Alexey Shved (sh-VEHD’) and forward Luc Mbah a Moute (look BAH’-ah MOO’-tay) from Minnesota.

GOLF-THE BARCLAYS

Lead is shared

PARAMUS, N.J. (AP) β€” There’s a two-way tie for top entering Sunday’s final round of The Barclays FedEx playoff event in Paramus, New Jersey. Jim Furyk (FYOOR’-ihk) and Jason Day share the top spot at 9-under-par, one shot in front of Hunter Mahan (MAY’-han). Fifteen players were separated by three shots.

Pre-tournament favorite Rory McIlroy and Masters champ Bubba Watson are 4-under, five shots off the pace.

LPGA-CANADIAN WOMEN’S OPEN

Ready for the final round

LONDON, Ontario (AP) β€” South Korea’s So Yeon Ryu (soh yahn yoo) finished the third round of the LPGA’s Canadian Open in first place, four shots in front of Azahara Munoz (ath-uh-HAR’-uh MOON’-yohz) of Spain and South Korea’s Na Yeon Choi (choy). Ryu shot a 5-under-67 to finish play after 54 holes at 20-under-par. Munoz had a 63 in round three to stake her claim to second place.

CHAMPIONS TOUR-BOEING CLASSIC

Good round propels Dunlap to the lead

SNOQUALMIE, Wash. (AP) β€” Scott Dunlap has the second round leader at the Champions Tour Boeing Classic. He completed his round of 63 to finish 12-under-par. The 63 included an eagle and seven birdies, five on the back nine. He’s one shot ahead of Doug Garwood.

Phelps wins gold, Ledecky breaks 400 world record

GOLD COAST, Australia (AP) β€” American teenage Katie Ledecky (leh-DEK’-ee) and Michael Phelps led the U.S. attack at the Pan Pacific championships. The 17-year old broke her fourth gold medal of the meet, breaking her own world record in the 400-meter freestyle. Her winning time was 3 minutes, 58.37 seconds.

Phelps followed up on his relay gold by winning his first individual title since returning to international competition following 1 Β½ years in retirement. The most decorated swimmer in history won the 100-meter butterfly in 51.29, edging long-time U.S. teammate Ryan Lochte (LAHK’-tee).

BASKETBALL-TEAM USA

U.S. roster is set

NEW YORK (AP) β€” The roster is set for the U.S. men’s national basketball team. Four players were cut today, Damian Lillard, Kyle Korver, Gordon Hayward and Chandler Parsons, while Derrick Rose made the team.

Rose was expected to make the team if he was healthy enough after missing most of the last two seasons following two knee surgeries.

The rest of the roster is: Stephen (STEF’-ihn) Curry, Anthony Davis, James Harden, Kyrie Irving, DeMarcus Cousins, Klay Thompson, Andre Drummond, Rudy Gay, DeMar DeRozan, Kenneth Faried and Mason Plumlee.

HORSE RACING-TRAVERS

Longshot V.E. Day wins 145th Travers

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. (AP) β€” Twenty-to-one longshot V.E. Day caught Wicked Strong late to take the 145th running of the Travers Stakes by a nose over an impressive field that included Belmont champion Tonalist and favorite Bayern.

Trainer Jimmy Jerkens swept the top two spots in the 1-1/4-mile Grade 1 stakes for three-year-olds, with the more well-regarded Wicked Strong coming second.

GYMNASTICS

Biles defends women’s title

PITTSBURGH (AP) β€” Simone Biles easily captured her second straight U.S. women’s gymnastics national title on Saturday night, setting the stage for an even bigger title defense in China this fall at the world championships.

The 17-year-old from Texas posted a two-day total of 122.550, more than four points clear of Kyla Ross.

LITTLE LEAGUE WORLD SERIES

Chicago wins U.S. final, plays South Korea Sunday

SOUTH WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. (AP) β€” Joshua Houston survived a rocky start to pitch five innings and also brought in the tying run with a line single in the fifth to lead Chicago past Las Vegas 7-5 on Saturday in the U.S. final at the Little League World Series.

The Great Lakes Region champions from Jackie Robinson West advanced to meet South Korea in Sunday’s championship game.
