OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) β€” The Los Angeles Angels are back on top in the American League West after their 9-4 victory over the Oakland Athletics last night. Josh Hamilton hit his 10th homer, a two-run shot off loser Scott Kazmir, in the third inning and Mike Trout hit his 29th of the season off reliever Jesse Chavez.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP)__ The Oakland Athletics have placed their closer Sean Doolittle on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right intercostal, a muscle in the rib cage. Doolittle, who is eighth in the league with 20 saves, has a 2.28 ERA in 54 relief appearances with opponents batting just .171 against him.

LOS ANGELES (AP) β€” Lucas Duda homered twice, drove in a career-high five runs and was involved in the New York Mets’ first triple play in over four seasons in an 11-3 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers. Despite the loss, the Dodgers maintained their 4 1-2 game lead on San Francisco in the NL West following the Giants’ 14-6 defeat at Washington.

ST. LOUIS (AP) β€” For the second straight year, the St. Louis Rams are going with Plan B at quarterback. Rams quarterback Sam Bradford has a torn ACL in his left knee for the second straight year and is out for the season. That means backup Shaun Hill likely will start the season as Rams QB.

NEW YORK (AP)β€” The 15-day U.S. Open, the last Grand Slam of the tennis season, starts today in New York. The 2013 men’s singles champion, Rafael Nadal (rah-fay-ehl nah-DAHL’) of Spain, withdrew from this year’s tournament because of an injured right wrist. The 2013 women’s singles champion, Serena Williams, is going for her sixth U.S. Open and 18th overall Grand Slam title.
