CHARLOTTE, NC– Outside auditors hired by the city of Charlotte reportedly were let down after only finding ‘lax oversight’ following the review of Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
After looking into the management of CLT Airport, auditors say they uncovered missing documentation, a lack of written policies and an ambiguously calculated lease that could have cost the airport around $1 million.
The audits were said to focus on the airport workings that took place under the former Aviation Director Jerry Orr, who ran the airport from 1989-2013.
Orr said Wednesday he left his position as Aviation Director abruptly in July 2013 and said the city wanted to do audits to look for dirt on the airport’s operations during his time there.
Officials say the goal of the audits were reportedly to try to find fraud and mismanagement in the airport but found neither.
“It looks to me like they spent a half a million dollars to try to discredit me, and ended up shooting themselves in the foot,” said Orr.
A full set of audits were reportedly scheduled to be released Thursday but Interim Aviation Director, Brent Cagle, said auditors didn’t find any fraud or deliberate mismanagement of the airport but says it did hurt it’s credibility.
The audits were ordered by Charlotte City Manager Ron Carlee back in October during the height of the airport authority battle, It is still unclear ultimately have control over Charlotte Douglas.
