We’re getting a detailed look inside the investigation into the murder of Maggie Daniels.
Warrants have been unsealed, as the Catawba County District Attorney announces his plan to seek the death penalty in this case. We’ve also learned investigators are looking at the accused killer as a suspect in another unsolved crime.
It’s the most information we’ve seen on Maggie Daniels’ murder yet. Three search warrants executed in Sharman Odom’s apartment are now unsealed, and putting together the puzzle pieces of what happened to the popular school counselor.
Daniels was killed Friday, June 27. The unsealed warrants say she was found the next morning on the floor of her bedroom, clothed only in a pair of shorts that were turned inside out.
There were signs of a struggle, and ligature marks on Daniels’ neck suggesting she was strangled. An autopsy confirmed the cause of death, and showed she had been raped and sodomized repeatedly.
The warrants also paint a picture of Sharman Odom as a man who stalked Maggie Daniels like prey.
A neighbor told police the accused killer mentioned Daniels numerous times, saying she was attractive and that he wanted to “get with” her. He says Odom also showed him a picture on his phone of Daniels from social media.
Other witnesses said Odom asked if Daniels had a boyfriend, and when told she did, said “it didn’t matter”. And that he knew she lived alone.
Investigators also interviewed the mother of Maggie Daniels’ boyfriend several times. She said she caught Odom staring at Daniels while sunbathing.
WCCB Charlotte spoke with Daniels’ boyfriend. He says the family is grieving and didn’t want to talk about the case.
Daniels was last seen in the morning on June 27. Witnesses saw Odom walking near her apartment twice that day.
The unsealed warrants say Odom is a person of interest in a rape case in 2012 where he lived in the same complex as the victim. The documents do not say where that happened.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg charged him with rape, assault by strangulation, and robbery in 2010 and 2012. The charges were dismissed in both cases.
