CHARLOTTE, NC — The family of a man who died after being tased by a CMPD officer will be awarded $500,000 for damages.  La-Reko Williams died in 2011.  His parents filed the suit against the city, claiming Officer Michael Forbes used excessive force.  Relatives believe Thursday’s verdict is the beginning of closure.

“I don’t think there was an amount of money that could be awarded to help us move forward.  What helps us move forward is that we can honestly say that justice was served,” said Williams’ aunt Lavondia Holloman.

Witnesses say they saw Williams beating his girlfriend at the Woodlawn light rail station, and then Officer Forbes fired his taser twice.  He was cleared of any wrongdoing.
