Β CHARLOTTE, N.C. — West Charlotte High School student D’Nea Watson is seriously injured after she was hit by a car on Beatties Ford Road Friday.
Watson, 16, was walking to class around 6:45 a.m. when she was hit by 30-year-old Ronetta Wilson driving a 1998 Nissan Altima.
Watson was not using a crosswalk when she attempted to cross on the 1500 block of Beatties Ford Road.
West Charlotte Principal John Wall rode with Watson and medic to CMC. Her parents were notified shortly after.
Nelson remained on scene after the accident and cooperated with authorities. Detectives say drugs and alcohol were not factors in the crash.
CMS released a statement Friday saying, “This week, the first week of a new school year, two Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students have been struck by automobiles off campus in separate incidents. These tragic events stress the importance of road safety for motorists and students. We ask that motorists take extra care when driving near school campuses. We encourage parents to speak with their children about looking both ways when crossing streets. Our thoughts are with both students and their families.”
