NEW YORK (AP) β It’s a light day of play at the U.S. Open as the tournament starts to wind down. In men’s quarterfinal play today, sixth-seed Tomas Berdych (TOH’-mahs bur-DEEK’) faces No. 14 Marin Cilic (CHIHL’-ihch) and second-seed Roger Federer takes on No. 20 Gael Monfils (GAH’-ehl mohn-FEES’).
CHERRY HILLS, Colo. (AP) β The third of four PGA FedEx Cup events is this week in Cherry Hills, Colorado. It’s the BMW Championship and as play begins the overall leader in the FedEx standings is last week’s winner Chris Kirk. The FedEx playoff comes to an end next week in Atlanta.
BILBAO, Spain (AP) β The U.S. men’s national basketball team is 4-0 at the Basketball World Cup after yesterday’s 106-71 win over Dominican Republic. Kenneth Faried (fah-REED’) led the way for the Americans with 16 points as the U.S. clinched the No. 1 seed in their group.
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) β Sponsorship of NASCAR’s second-tier of racing will no longer be named for Nationwide Insurance. Comcast Corp. has signed a 10-year agreement to replace Nationwide as the title sponsor of the circuit. The series will be known as the NASCAR Xfinity Series through 2024. Sports Business Daily has valued the package at close to $200 million.
