CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Lawyers for former Charlotte Mayor Patrick Cannon have submitted an official request to continue his sentencing hearing.

Cannon’s original sentencing date is set for September 25th. However, Attorney James Ferguson II has requested the date be changed to the week of October 13th.
Ferguson says the initial date conflicts with the availability of witnesses necessary to the sentencing presentation.
Cannon has pleaded guilty to taking more than $50,000 in bribes from FBI undercover agents. An affidavit in the case says Cannon sought more than $1 million in kickbacks during a meeting in his office.
Cannon was arrested last March and resigned that day. He pleaded guilty June 3. Cannon faces up to 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine when he is sentenced.
