CONCORD, NC — Drivers in Concord are getting used to a new traffic pattern that can be confusing at first. The state’s first diverging diamond interchange is open at I-85, exit 52 at Poplar Tent Road.
It shifts drivers to the left, passing oncoming traffic to cross the bridge, before directing them back to the right side. DOT officials say it reduces congestion, and makes it easier to get on the interstate. There are also fewer traffic signals.
“We hope that as time continues and experience level increases, that people will be more accustomed to it,” said NC DOT Engineer Davis Diggs.
This is the first of four diverging diamonds planned for the Charlotte area. Construction is underway for one off I-77 at Exit 28 on Catawba Avenue.
