CHARLOTTE, NC — Health officials suspect the enterovirus that has hit Midwestern children hard, making hundreds sick, is here in the Queen City.

Dr. Charles Bregier with Novant Health says the pediatric ICU is full of young patients.  The virus primarily affects kids under 12.  Teens who have asthma are also susceptible.  Doctors say to keep an eye out for a rash, a severe cough or difficulty breathing.

“It’s very contagious, spread by coughing or congestion, or touching any surface that someone else might have coughed,” said Bregier.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools are preparing for a possible outbreak, teaching kids proper hygiene and telling parents to look out for flu-like symptoms.
