CHARLOTTE, NC — Thursday marks the 13th anniversary of the terror attacks on America. In Matthews, the Flags of Remembrance were a visible reminder of the tragedy. The Firefighter Steven Coakley Foundation placed 2,997 flags in Stumpton Park Wednesday. Coakley’s sister lives in Charlotte and started the foundation in his honor. Each flag in the Twin Tower-shaped display represents a life lost on 9-11.
“It started out as a simple remembrance that’s turned into a huge event. Today we had our biggest turnout we ever had,” said Edmund Walker of the FSCF.
Ceremonies marking the 9-11 terror attacks will be private in New York and the Pentagon Thursday. The public can tour the World Trade Center site. This will be the first time it’s been open on the anniversary.
