Evidence Indicates Body Found In Wooded Area To Be ASU Freshman Anna Smith

 BOONE, N.C. — Boone Police and NC SBI Investigators identified the body found in a wooded area to be Anna Marie Smith from evidence located at the scene. 

A North Carolina drivers license and Appalachian State student ID found at the scene belonged to Smith. The body will be taken to to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for an autopsy. Police do not know when the autopsy determining the cause of death will be available.

Officers responded to a wooded area near Poplar Grove Road at 10:30 a.m. Saturday after a report of a dead body.

Smith was last seen Tuesday, September 2.
