Mother Charged After 7-Year-Old Daughter Shoots Herself In Hand

 CHARLOTTE, N.C. —  A mother is charged after her seven-year-old daughter shot herself in the hand with a loaded gun.

Heather Nicole Davenport, 27, is charged with failure to properly secure a weapon.

Police were notified by CMC’s emergency room just after 1 p.m. Saturday that the girl was suffering from a gunshot wound.

Police went to the hospital and spoke with Heather Davenport, the child’s mother.

Davenport said she was sleeping when her children, ages five and seven, found a loaded gun inside the home on Bank Street. The girl accidentally shot herself in the hand while handling the gun. Davenport drove her daughter to CMC for treatment.

Davenport was taken to CMPD headquarters and interviewed by Youth Crime Detectives.
