CHARLOTTE, NC —Β A vigil Tuesday night for an unarmed man shot and killed by a CMPD officer just over a year ago. Β More than a dozen people joined the NAACP to pray for Jonathan Ferrell’s family. Β They gathered across from CMPD headquarters at the fallen officer memorial in Uptown Charlotte.
“The fact that it happened right in the city that I live in, not too far from my home where I have to raise my son, it was very alarming,” said activist Cece White.
Officer Wes Kerrick remains on unpaid suspension. Β He’s expected to go on trial next year on voluntary manslaughter charges. Β
Ferrell crashed his car in east Charlotte last September and apparently went to a woman’s house looking for help. Β She called 911, thinking someone was trying to break in. Β Officers say Ferrell charged at Β them. Β Kerrick fired 12 shots, hitting Ferrell 10 times.
