CHARLOTTE, NC — The people of Scotland will learn first thing Friday if they’ve won their independence.  More than four million voters flocked to polls Thursday to decide whether the country should sever its ties with England after 307 years.

Helen Cathey, the owner of Near and Far Scottish in Charlotte, applauds the country for giving the people a say, since voters are clearly split over the issue.  “Regardless of the turnout of the vote, I just hope it clearly speaks for the voice of the majority of the Scottish citizens,” she said.

A “yes” vote would trigger 18 months of negotiations.  The two countries would separate before Scotland’s planned independence on March 24th, 2016.
