Β CHARLOTTE, NC —Β The people of Scotland will learn first thing Friday if they’ve won their independence. Β More than four million voters flocked to polls Thursday to decide whether the country should sever its ties with England after 307 years. Β

Helen Cathey, the owner of Near and Far Scottish in Charlotte, applauds the country for giving the people a say, since voters are clearly split over the issue. Β “Regardless of the turnout of the vote, I just hope it clearly speaks for the voice of the majority of the Scottish citizens,” she said.

A “yes” vote would trigger 18 months of negotiations. Β The two countries would separate before Scotland’s planned independence on March 24th, 2016.
