WASHINGTON, D.C. —  After six years on the job, Eric Holder is resigning as head of the Justice Department.

Holder is one of the few original members of President Obama’s cabinet, and the first African American Attorney General.  Holder has been applauded for his civil rights enforcement, but he’s also been caught in several controversies, including the Operation Fast and Furious which gave guns to Mexican drug cartels.  He was also held in contempt of Congress in 2012.

“I want to thank you, Mr. President, for the opportunity that you gave me to serve and for giving me the greatest honor of my professional life,” said Holder.

House Speaker John Boehner called Holder’s resignation long overdue.  Holder will remain at his post until a successor is confirmed.
