GLENEAGLES, Scotland (AP) β Europe has the first point in the Ryder Cup, with Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson beating Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson 5 and 4 in the opening fourballs at Gleneagles.
But the American rookie pairing of Justin Spieth and Patrick Reed looked set to even the contest, golng 6 shots up with seven holes to play against Ian Poulter and Stephen Gallacher.
Rose and Stenson grabbed the lead on the second hole and pulled away, with Rose making a 15-foot birdie putt at the 10th to go up by four.
The match ended at the 14th after another birdie putt by Rose. The American duo went without a birdie in the match.
