ALBEMARLE, N.C. — Police are investigating a shooting at a high school in Stanly County.

Officials say Bernard Miller was shot twice by Jalen Russell during an argument at Albemarle High School Tuesday morning.  Both the victim and the alleged shooter are students at the school.

Miller was originally transported to Stanly Memorial Hospital but he has since been moved to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.  Officials say Miller is currently in stable condition after being shot in the hip and abdomen.

Russell is in police custody and has been charged with assault with a deadly weapon.  Police say he immediately put the gun down, walked to the principal’s office and turned himself in.  The school was placed on lock down until officers confirmed no one else was a threat at the school.

Reports claim Russell was involved in a fight at his former high school in Montgomery County last year.  Russell reportedly stabbed a fellow football player during the fight after football practice.  Officials have not released much information about this incident since Russell was a juvenile at the time.

School officials say the school is clear and all students were picked up by their parents at a nearby staging area.

Classes for Stanly Community College held at Albemarle High School have been canceled for Tuesday.  Stanly County Schools will decide later today if school will be held tomorrow for Albemarle High students.

There will be a community prayer service at First Presbyterian Church in Albemarle at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
