UN-VATICAN-ISLAMIC STATE

Vatican No. 2 urges UN to defend unarmed from Islamic State

UNITED NATIONS (AP) β€” The Vatican is urging the U.N. to use force if necessary to stop the “atrocious persecution” of religious minorities in Iraq and Syria.

Vatican Secretary of State Pietro Parolin made his appeal Monday in a speech to the U.N. General Assembly.

Cardinal Parolin, who ranks second only to Pope Francis, denounced militants who are “persecuting and murdering in the name of God,” and said there’s an urgent need “to stop aggression through multilateral action and a proportionate use of force.”

He said “the combined forces of a number of nations will be required to guarantee the defense of unarmed citizens.”

Without naming the Islamic State group, Parolin said violence against religious minorities shows “a disregard for God and falsifies religion itself.”

UN-ISRAEL-MILITANT ISLAM

Netanyahu says militant Islam is a cancer

UNITED NATIONS (AP) β€” Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says militant Islam is a cancer that’s spreading and must be removed before it’s too late.

In a speech to the U.N. General Assembly, Netanyahu warned that wherever militant Islam rules, “women are treated as chattel, Christians are decimated and minorities are subjugated, sometimes given the stark choice: convert or die.”

The Israeli leader said Hamas and the Islamic State group are “branches of the same poisonous tree,” both bent on world domination through terror, just as the Nazis were. But a Palestinian official says the speech was “a blatant manipulation of facts,” hate language and slander.

Turning to Shiite Islam, Netanyahu warned that the gravest threat to the world today is the danger of Iran obtaining nuclear weapons.

He concluded his speech by quoting a verse from the Bible’s book of Isaiah: “For the sake of Zion I will not be silent. For the sake of Jerusalem I will not be still until her justice shines bright and her salvation glows like a flaming torch.”

CALVARY CHAPEL LAWSUIT

Family of late pastor sues Calvary Chapel

COSTA MESA, Calif. (AP) β€” The family of the late founder of Calvary Chapel has filed a lawsuit against the church, claiming elder abuse and wrongful takeover of his property.

The Orange County Register reports the lawsuit was filed Friday by Janette Manderson, the daughter of founding pastor Chuck Smith, who died in 2013. The suit claims Smith’s illness and resulting death was exacerbated by the negligent care of a nurse who was chosen by his son-in-law, Brian Broderson.

Broderson is Calvary Chapel’s president, and serves as chairman of its board of directors.

According to the suit, Broderson and others on the board used Smith’s failing health as an opportunity to take control of the church and his life insurance policy.

Neither Broderson nor other board members named in the suit could be reached for comment.

SEVENTH DAY ADVENTIST-SUPREME COURT

Missouri Supreme Court to hear child abuse case

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) β€” Missouri’s Supreme Court will hear arguments Wednesday about whether a Seventh-day Adventist accused of restricting his son’s diet and locking him in a church bathroom for several days is guilty of child abuse.

In 2011, Peter Hansen of Springfield, Missouri, was convicted of abusing one of his children and was sentenced to three years in prison. The Springfield News-Leader reports that a judge suspended the punishment and placed Hansen on five years of probation with 100 days in the Greene County Jail.

Hansen said his religion encourages vegetarianism and the boy’s punishment didn’t constitute child abuse.

Prosecutors argue the boy was limited to about two cups of food per day. They say there is sufficient evidence to prove Hansen inflicted cruel and inhumane punishment by locking the boy in a small, dark and cold bathroom for days at a time and withholding food.

BISHOP INVESTIGATED

KC Bishop Finn under Vatican investigation

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) β€” The Vatican is investigating Bishop Robert Finn of Kansas City, Missouri, two years after he was convicted of failing to report suspected abuse.

A Finn spokesman says the bishop was notified of the investigation by the papal ambassador in Washington.

The National Catholic Reporter was first to report the inquiry which is being conducted by the Vatican’s Congregation for Bishops.

Archbishop Terrence Prendergast of Ottawa visited the Diocese of Kansas City-St. Joseph last week as part of the investigation. His spokeswoman said Monday only that the visit was private.

Finn is the highest-ranking U.S. church leader to be convicted for failing to take action on child sex abuse claims. He was sentenced to two years’ probation for not reporting a priest who had hundreds of pornographic photos of young girls on a computer.

PRIEST-SEXUAL TOURISM

Pennsylvania priest ordered detained until trial

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. (AP) β€” A federal magistrate has ordered a Roman Catholic priest from Pennsylvania to remain jailed until his trial on sex tourism charges.

The Rev. Joseph Maurizio Jr. was arrested last week on allegations that he traveled to Honduras to have sex with children while he did missionary work with the poor. He was placed on leave from the Altoona-Johnstown diocese earlier this month.

At a hearing Monday in Johnstown, prosecutors called Maurizio a danger to the community and a flight risk. But a relative and two family friends cited his religious work and said they have seen him around children and had no concerns about his conduct.

U.S. Magistrate Judge Keith Pesto said they had painted what he called a “Father Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” portrait that made his decision especially difficult.

MUSLIM-JAIL LAWSUIT

Muslim inmate sues Greene County jail

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (AP) β€” Another Muslim inmate is suing the Greene County, Missouri, jail, alleging that jailers violated his civil rights by denying him a Quran and a prayer rug and refusing to let him attend Friday prayer services.

The Springfield News-Leader reported Sunday that Richard Ray McLendon Jr. filed a handwritten lawsuit against the jail and the program coordinator of religious matters.

Six other Muslim inmates sued Sheriff Jim Arnott and deputies in 2013, claiming religious discrimination.

McLendon is waiting to be sent to the federal prison in Marion, Illinois, on a two-year sentence for violating supervised release in a sex offender case.

Arnott has said Qurans are available in the jail. He declined to comment on the latest lawsuit.

SRI LANKA-BUDDHIST EXTREMISTS

Myanmar, Sri Lanka Buddhist hard-liners join hands

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka (AP) β€” A hard-line Buddhist monk from Myanmar known for his anti-Muslim stance says his movement will join hands with a like-minded Sri Lankan group to “protect” Buddhists, whom he calls an endangered world minority.

Ashin Wirathu, leader of 969, a fundamentalist movement, was a special invitee Sunday at a rally of Bodu Bala Sena, or Buddhist Power Force, a Sri Lankan group accused of instigating deadly violence against the country’s minority Muslims in June.

Joining 969 could further boost an already soaring support base for Bodu Bala Sena, an ultranationalist group that has enlisted thousands of youth and Buddhist monks in just two years of existence. This, in turn, could exacerbate mistrust and tensions between Sri Lanka’s majority Sinhalese-Buddhists and its Muslims.
