Β RALEIGH, NC — A last-ditch effort to block gay marriage in North Carolina. Β House Speaker Thom Tillis and Senate leader Phil Berger filed a motion Thursday seeking to intervene in legal challenges to Amendment One.
The legislators have also hired California lawyer John C. Eastman, Chairman of the conservative National Organization for Marriage to assist them. Β WCCB Charlotte accessed a marriage license application at the Register of Deeds office Thursday. Β The words “bride” and “groom” have been replaced with “Applicant One” and “Applicant Two”.
Meantime, the South Carolina Supreme Court is ordering state probate courts not to issue same-sex marriage licenses until a federal judge decides whether the state constitution’s ban on the unions is legal. Β
The justices issued a ruling late Thursday, just one day after a probate judge began accepting applications for the licenses. Β He based the move on a ruling overturning Virginia’s same-sex marriage ban.
