ST. LOUIS (AP) β The San Francisco 49ers stormed back from an early 14-0 deficit and beat the Rams 31-17 in St. Louis as Colin Kaepernick (KAP’-ur-nik) passed for 343 yards and three touchdowns. Brandon Lloyd, Anquan Boldin and Michael Crabtree each caught a scoring pass for the 4-2 49ers, who have won three in a row. Austin Davis tossed a 22-yard pass to Lance Kendricks to give the Rams a 14-point lead in the first quarter.
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) β Game 3 of the American League Championship Series between the Orioles and Royals was rained out on Monday in Kansas City. The game has been rescheduled for Tuesday night, with Wei-Yin Chen (way-yihn chehn) starting for Baltimore against either Jeremy Guthrie or James Shields. The Royals took the first two games of the series in Baltimore.
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) β The St. Louis Cardinals currently plan to keep catcher Yadier (YAH’-dee-ehr) Molina on their active roster for the National League Championship series despite a strained left oblique muscle sustained in Game 2 on Sunday. He flew on the team charter to the Bay Area after leaving Busch Stadium for an MRI exam. Manager Mike Matheny was encouraged Molina was able to throw Monday.
PHOENIX (AP) β The Arizona Diamondbacks have named Chip Hale as their new manager and given him the task of improving a ball club that was a major league-worst 64-98 this season. Hale spent 10 seasons in the Arizona Diamondbacks’ organization, the final three as the major league third base coach. He spent the last three years as Oakland’s third base coach after one year in that capacity with the New York Mets.
BOSTON (AP) β Daniel Briere (bree-EHR’) couldn’t have picked a better time to score his 300th NHL goal. Briere scored off a rebound with four-tenths of a second left in Colorado’s 2-1 win at Boston. It was the first win of the season for the Avalanche, who opened with back-to-back losses to Minnesota and hadn’t scored a goal in their first 143 minutes until Jamie McGinn tallied 3:28 into the second period.
