Β RALEIGH, NC — A new challenge to same-sex marriage in North Carolina. Β

A federal judge says Republican State House Speaker Thom Tillis and Senate Leader Phil Berger can intervene in two pending cases. Β That means they will be able to appeal whether Virginia’s same-sex marriage decision applies here in North Carolina.

Here in Mecklenburg County, 25 same-sex couples filed for marriage licenses Tuesday. Β That brings the two-day total to 87.

It could be at least a month before same-sex couple in South Carolina learn whether they can get married. Β A district court judge gave attorneys until next week to file motions in a case challenging the state’s gay marriage ban. Β The case was on hold until last week’s Supreme Court Decision.
