Giants hope to finish off the Cards

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) β€” We could know the World Series matchup later this evening. The scene for the Fall Classic is half set as the Royals wrapped up the American League Championship yesterday by finishing off Baltimore in four straight. Tonight, the San Francisco Giants would join the Royals with a win over the St. Louis Cardinals in San Francisco.

The Giants took a 3-1 series lead last night with a 6-4 win.

The pitching matchup for tonight’s game is a rematch of the series-opening starters, with Madison Bumgarner going for the Giants against Adam Wainwright.

Should the Cardinals win tonight’s game, the series will shift back to St. Louis for Game 6 and, if need be, a Game 7. The sixth game would take place Saturday night with a Game 7 Sunday night.

The World Series will start Tuesday with either the Giants or Cardinals facing the Royals in Kansas City.

NFL

Pats entertain Jets in AFC East matchup

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) β€” This evening’s NFL game features a pairing of two teams from the AFC East as New England plays host to the New York Jets. The Patriots sit on top of the division with a record of 4-2 while the Jets are dead-last with one win and 5 defeats. In last Sunday’s 37-22 win over Buffalo, Pats’ quarterback Tom Brady passed for 361 yards and four touchdown passes. He had completions to different 10 receivers.

If Jets’ fans weren’t concerned enough about the game, Brady has won 40 consecutive regular-season home games against AFC opponents and is 6-0 in Thursday night games.

CORVALLIS, Oregon (AP) β€” The University of Utah, the 20th-ranked team in The Associated Press football poll, is on the road for a game this evening against Oregon State. Each school enters the contest with a record of 4-1 and 1-1 in the Pac-12. Utah’s first win over a Pac-12 team as a member of the conference came over Oregon State in 2011. The last time they met was in Sept. of 2013 with State coming out on top, in overtime, 51-48.

NHL-SCHEDULE

Pens look to extend success over Stars and two unbeaten teams are facing off

UNDATED (AP) β€” For fans of the Pittsburgh Penguins anticipation for tonight’s home game with Dallas must be high. You see the Stars are winless in their last six games in the Steel City. The Sidney Crosby-led Pens are unbeaten in two games this young season while the Stars are 1-1-1. The clubs split their two games last season.

A pair of unbeaten teams is meeting tonight in Nassau Coliseum as the Islanders entertain the San Jose Sharks. Each team enters this evening’s contest 3-0-0 and with a win the New Yorkers would have their third 4-0-0 start to a season in franchise history. The Sharks are used to fast starts as they won six in a row to start last season and seven straight the season before.

The New Jersey Devils are also 3-0 and tonight they are skating against the Capitals in Washington. A year ago the Devils won three of four games between the two.

Montreal starts the home portion of its schedule tonight with a game against the Bruins. Last season the Canadiens won three of the four games these two clubs played.

Ottawa is also opening its home schedule tonight with a game against the Avalanche. The Avs swept the season series last year

In the final two games of the night, the league champion Los Angeles Kings are home to St. Louis and Carolina is in New York to face the Rangers.

TENNIS

Veteran player retires

MOSCOW (AP) β€” Former third-ranked player Nikolay Davydenko (NIH’-koh-ly dah-vee-DENK’-oh) has confirmed his retirement from tennis. Davydenko has not played on the ATP tour since the French Open in May and made his announcement on the sidelines of the Kremlin Cup tournament in Moscow.

The 33-year-old Russian said a series of injuries in recent years prompted him to step away from competitive play. Davydenko won 21 tour titles and the 2009 ATP finals, but never managed to reach the final of a Grand Slam tournament despite being a four-time semifinalist. He was investigated over match-fixing claims in 2007 by the ATP but cleared the following year.
