CLAREMONT, NC – Another tragedy strikes a community already in mourning. A third student from Bunker Hill High School in Claremont dies — just two weeks after two others were killed in a car crash.
“We don’t see them one day and think that they’re going to be gone the next day. We expect them to be back tomorrow to talk to, laugh with,” explains classmate Tyler White. “It just feels like Bunker Hill is getting hammered, like, over and over again,” he says.
Police say Friday, 16-year-old Austin Hedrick was sitting in between his dad Scotty and another person when a rifle went off inside their truck a little before midnight. Hedrick was hit in the head.
Classmates say Austin was soft-spoken, a member of the JV football team and he wrestled. “He’s a real friendly guy. You could talk to him about, just about anything,” White says.
The painted rock and marquee, a sight becoming too familiar. Two weeks ago students gathered around there to pray for Alec Sigmon and Justin Turner. The two died in a crash on Riverbend Road October 3rd.
The principal at Bunker Hill tells WCCB counselors will again be on hand Monday. He says this is a tragedy that will affect the community in so many ways.
Officials say this investigation is ongoing, and so far, charges have not been filed.
