OTTAWA, CANADA — We’re learning new details about the man accused of going on a shooting spree at Canada’s National War Memorial and the main Parliament building.
New surveillance video shows Michael Zehaf-Bibeau dashing from the National War Memorial in Ottawa just moments after he shot and killed Corporal Nathan Cirillo on Wednesday. Sources say the suspect may have had contact with jihadists in Canada and here in the U.S., where he visited several times.
“The fact that he was here doesn’t necessarily mean that he was planning something nefarious,” said Daveed Gartenstein-Ross of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies. “We need to know what the time frame is as to when he was in the United States.”
Police say Bibeau had a history of drug problems and converted to Islam. Canadian authorities put his passport on hold after learning he wanted to travel to the Middle East to fight.
