COLUMBIA, SC — One of South Carolina’s most powerful politicians leaves office, disgraced by scandal.

House Speaker Bobby Harrell admitted to using campaign funds to pay for personal expenses that include travel and goods for his friends and family.  His plea deal forced him to resign from office, but helped him avoid prison time.

“This has been a particularly hard two years on my family, and, doing this today, we hope resonated this,” said Harrell.

A judge sentenced Harrell to three years probation.  He must pay a $30,000 fine and reimburse the state more than $93,000.  He cannot run for office for three years.
