Speed and Alcohol Factors in Deadly SW Charlotte Accident

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — WCCB has learned that speed and alcohol were factors in a deadly crash in southwest Charlotte early Sunday morning.

The accident happened in the 3300 block of W. Arrowood Road around 3:56 a.m.

Officers say 25-year-old Billy Blackwelder was driving a 1993 Jeep Cherokee eastbound on W. Arrowood Road and was traveling at a high rate of speed. As Blackwelder approached a curve, the Jeep drove off the left side of the road into the median. He attempted to overcorrect the vehicle but lost control. The Jeep traveled across both lanes of travel before colliding with a tree.

Officers say, Blackwelder and the front right passenger, 26-year-old Eric Morris were both killed at the scene. The rear passenger, Kathleen Copenhaver was transported by Medic to Carolinas Medical Center.
