IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Iredell County Deputies and the N.C. State Bureau of Investigations are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting on Interstate 40.
Deputies say the call came in Monday afternoon around 3:30 p.m. near mile marker 157. Authorities say a deputy from Davidson County was transporting a mental patient to Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory. The man had reportedly been involuntarily committed. At some point, a struggle occurred. Investigators say the pair ended up outside of the cruiser on Interstate 40, where the deputy shot the man. The patient was killed on the scene.
“When we got here, we found the deputy and the victim laying on the side of the interstate,” said Major Marty Byers of the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.
The deputy is on paid leave as state investigators try to piece together exactly what happened. No names have been released at this time.
