CONCORD, NC — A Swiss battery manufacturer plans to bring at least 2,500 jobs to the Charlotte area over the next three years. Alevo will produce utility-scale batteries at the old Philip Morris Cigarette plant in Concord.
These aren’t batteries like you’d use in your remote control, but large-scale ones used to help power companies meet energy demands. The batteries will be shipped around the world.
“We’ve going to be manufacturing batteries here in Concord, North Carolina and shipping them to China, how about that? That’s a pretty good, novel concept, isn’t it?” said Rep. Richard Hudson (R, NC).
Alevo says the batteries also help reduce energy waste. They keep utility companies from having to power fossil-fueled plants up and down to meet electricity demand.
