COLORADO- Every kid wants to be part of Halloween, but for Jake Schell it’s more of a challenge than for most. Three days after he was born, Jake had a really bad brain hemorrhage, which caused his cerebral palsy and epilepsy. When he was younger, his parents would carry him from door to door for trick or treating. Now at age six they have to be creative.
Jake’s stepfather Andy says, “When you finally come to the acceptance of the wheelchair is part of this gig, it allowed us to be like we’re going to decorate the wheelchair.” From a fire engine to a tank, year after a year he gets more creative.
On average he spends between 20 and 30 hours on the costumes. When Andy posted pictures of Jake’s costumes, people commented calling him dad of the year. But he says, “Most people who are in our situation try to do what they can for their kids to make Halloween special since it’s not quite the same for them.”
