CRAMERTON, NC – A family in mourning rallies a community for changes after a driver hits and kills a teenager on his way to school. Steven Canipe’s family wants a crosswalk and sidewalk along the path he took to Cramerton Middle School.
Canipe’s brother Tyler says when he said goodbye to his brother last week, he didn’t know it was for the last time. “One second, your support beam is right there, and the next second he’s gone,” says Tyler Kotula.
Canipe was walking to the school last week when witnesses say he darted in front of a car on South New Hope Road.
Steven’s grandmother Sarah Canipe says she doesn’t understand why the school bus wouldn’t pick him up. “There’s children that live on that road. And have to walk to school. And in Steven’s case, the bus wouldn’t stop in front of the house. He had to walk all the way up to the school, on the other side of the road to cross,” she says.
Sunday night, family members urged supporters to sign a petition calling for a crosswalk and more sidewalks along the road to the school. “I don’t want any other families to be hurt emotionally. For another kid to die…” says cousin Isabella Canipe.
