HORNETS-KNICKS

Carmelo Anthony leads Knicks over Hornets 96-93

NEW YORK (AP) β€” On a night when he joined the NBA’s 20,000-point club, Carmelo Anthony scored 28 points, including the go-ahead basket with 1:23 remaining, and the New York Knicks edged the Charlotte Hornets 96-93 on Sunday night.

Al Jefferson had 21 points and Gary Neal added 17 points off the bench for the Hornets (1-2), who lost their second straight.

Amar’e Stoudemire had 17 points off the bench for the Knicks (2-1), who won their second straight. Iman Shumpert added 15 points.

With 2:49 remaining in the fourth quarter after Charlotte’s Kemba Walker scored on a reverse lay-up to extend the Hornets’ lead to 93-90. After a turnover by Lance Stephenson, Knicks backup point guard Pablo Prigioni found an open Shumpert, who hit a 3-pointer with 2:06 left, to even the game 93-all.

Walker then missed a layup with 1:42, setting up Anthony’s 15-foot jumper gave the Knicks the lead for good, 95-93.

KINGS-HURRICANES

Lindholm’s goal lifts Hurricanes over Kings 3-2

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) β€” Elias Lindholm’s second-period goal proved to be the difference in the Carolina Hurricanes’ 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday.

The Hurricanes won for the second straight day, and Los Angeles remained winless on the road this season. The Kings are 0-3-2 on the road and 6-1 at home in the early stages of their Stanley Cup title defense.

Victor Rask and Chris Terry also scored for the Hurricanes.

Mike Richards and Alec Martinez had goals for Los Angeles.

Rask gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 lead with 1:34 left in the first period off a nifty pass by Chris Terry. Just 50 seconds into the middle period on the power play, Terry fired in a one-timer from the right wing to make it 2-0.

S CAROLINA-RODGERS

Reserve lineman Rodgers not with Gamecocks

COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) β€” Reserve offensive lineman Na’Tay Rodgers is no longer with South Carolina.

Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier said Sunday the redshirt freshman is seeking a transfer. Spurrier said Rodgers had some problems with team policies the coach would not disclose and that all thought it was in the player’s best interest to participate elsewhere.

Rodgers is a 6-foot-5, 280-pound lineman from Waldorf, Maryland. He sat out last season and had hoped to gain time as a backup this year on the Gamecocks offensive line. But he was not part of the team’s two-deep lineup in a 45-42 overtime loss to Tennessee Saturday night.

The Gamecocks (4-5, 2-5 Southeastern Conference) have this week off before returning to play at Florida on Nov. 15.
