Jimmie Johnson won his third consecutive Texas fall race after already being eliminated from the Chase last month. He emerged from a frantic finish, the second attempt at a green-white-checkered finish after his teammate and Chase contender Jeff Gordon spun out from the front after contact with Brad Keselowski.
BOSTON (AP) β Boston Bruins coach Claude Julien has signed a multiyear contract extension. Julien led the Bruins to the Stanley Cup championship in 2010-11 and is the longest serving coach in consecutive seasons in franchise history. He has guided the Bruins to the playoffs in each of his seven full seasons as coach and has a 317-171- 65 record.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) β Tom Pernice (pur-NEES’) Jr. birdied the fourth playoff hole to beat Jay Haas in the Champions Tour’s season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship. The 55-year-old Pernice got up-and-down from the left bunker on the par-5 18th, holing a 6-foot putt after Haas made a 12-footer for par. Pernice capped his 3-under 67 with a 6-foot birdie putt on 18 to match Haas at minus-11.

NEW YORK (AP) β Wilson Kipsang of Kenya has won the men’s title at the New York City Marathon, while countrywoman Mary Keitany captured the women’s title. Kipsang won in an unofficial time of 2 hours, 10 minutes, 59 seconds. Boston Marathon champ Meb Keflezighi (kehf-LEHZH’-gee) of the United States was fourth.
