ROWAN COUNTY, N.C. — Police say two Rowan County students were arrested for having a pipe bomb at Southeast Middle School.
Investigators were called to the school on Friday in reference to a 13-year-old student being in possession of a suspicious device. The device was seized and the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office was called to investigate.
Police determined the device was a pipe bomb and was manufactured by the 13-year-old and another student who also attends the school. Police searched the students’ home for additional devices but did not find anything.
Detectives say they do not believe the students planned on using the device at the school. The students allegedly intended to use the bomb in a wooded area near one of the suspect’s homes.
Both students have been charged with felony possession and manufacture of a weapon of mass death and destruction and possession of a weapon on school grounds. Both students have also been suspended from school.
