CHARLOTTE, NC — The re-imaging of Charlotte’s historic Cherry neighborhood is forcing out many longtime residents.  The modest homes in this traditionally black area are being replaced with new, high-dollar developments.

The newest announcement has Charlotte-based builder Saussy Burbank planning 43 new homes along Main, Baxter, Luther and Eli Streets.  Prices for the first offerings range between $550,000 and $620,000.

“For them to build those houses over here, it’s like they almost know that these people are not going to be able to move and come back.  It’s like almost being forced out,” said one Cherry resident.

The first new Saussy Burbank homes in Cherry are expected to be complete by next summer.
