Β ROCK HILL, SC — Student athletes at Winthrop University busted on alcohol charges. Β At least 16 could be suspended from upcoming games, across several sports.Β
Winthrop’s Athletic Director says these students will be held accountable for their actions. Β All 16 were busted at an off-campus party. Β Eight of the athletes were charged with transferring alcohol to a person under 21. Β The other eight were cited for possession of alcohol under 21. Β The students play baseball, lacrosse, volleyball and women’s track, and some are cheerleaders. Β
So far, we know the athletes will face suspensions from upcoming games. Β And the university will also put down a punishment. Β
“They’re athletes, so they respect the school with what they do on and off the court. Β So I believe that they should be punished for what they did,” said student Ashley Briggs.
“Something should be done about it so that Winthrop and the athletic program are held to high standards,” added student Misty Hill.
According to the university, students accused of misusing alcohol are usually required to take an alcohol education program. Β They’re also monitored for signs of alcohol abuse.
