Raptors rally for fifth straight win

UNDATED (AP) β€” The Toronto Raptors have continued their strong start with a comeback win against Orlando.

Kyle Lowry scored 19 points and Terrence Ross had 17 as the Raptors beat the Magic 104-100. Toronto trailed by 11 in the fourth quarter before beating Orlando for the ninth straight time.

Lou Williams scored eight of his 14 points in the final period, and DeMar DeRozan added 16 points to help the Raptors pick up their fifth straight win and improve to an Eastern Conference-leading 7-1.

Memphis leads the Western Conference at 7-1 after Mike Conley scored 23 points to lead six Grizzlies in double-figures in a 107-102 win over the Los Angeles Lakers. Beno Udrih (BAY’-noh OO’-drik) had 16 points and Courtney Lee chipped in 15 to help the Grizzlies pick up their 17th consecutive regular-season home win.

Lakers guard Kobe Bryant scored a team-high 28 points but shot 10 of 26 from the field and surpassed Boston Celtics great John Havlicek (HAV’-lih-chehk) for the most missed field goals in an NBA career.

β€” Dirk Nowitzki became the highest-scoring NBA player born outside the U.S., delivering 23 points in the Mavericks’ 106-98 triumph against Sacramento in Dallas. The Kings led by 24 until they were outscored 58-28 from the middle of the second quarter to the end of the third.

β€” Tony Parker dropped in 28 and the San Antonio Spurs followed Monday’s comeback win over the Los Angeles Clippers by downing Golden State 113-100. Kawhi (kah-WY’) Leonard finished with 19 points and Tim Duncan added 12 and 13 rebounds as the Spurs dealt the Warriors their second straight loss since a 5-0 start.

β€” Damon Lillard poured in 29 points and Portland outscored Charlotte 27-15 in the fourth quarter of the Trail Blazers’ 102-100 win over the Hornets. LaMarcus Aldridge scored eight of his 25 points in the final period and finished with 14 rebounds in the Blazers’ third straight win.

β€” O.J. Mayo scored 19 points and Brandon Knight added 16 as the Bucks held off Oklahoma City 85-78 in Milwaukee. The Thunder fell to 0-5 on the road despite Reggie Jackson’s 29 points.

NBA-JAMES/TRIPLE-DOUBLE

League takes away LeBron’s triple-double.

CLEVELAND (AP) β€” The NBA has stripped LeBron James of his triple-double from Monday’s 118-111 win over New Orleans.

James originally was credited with 32 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, but the league has taken away one rebound and one assist after reviewing game video. He still has 37 career triple-doubles.

Showalter, Williams take top manager honors

UNDATED (AP) β€” The American and National League managers of the year have been announced, and both winners come from teams separated by about 40 miles.

Baltimore’s Buck Showalter has been voted the AL’s top skipper for the third time, edging the Los Angeles Angels’ Mike Scioscia (SOH’-shuh) and Ned Yost of Kansas City. Showalter received 25 of 30 first-place votes and 132 points in balloting by the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Showalter guided the Orioles to a 96-66 record and their first AL East title since 1997.

Washington’s Matt Williams has been selected as the NL Manager of the Year after leading the Nationals to the league’s best record in his first season at the helm. Williams got 18 of a possible 30 first place votes to outdistance Pittsburgh’s Clint Hurdle, last year’s winner. San Francisco’s Bruce Bochy (BOH’-chee) finished third in the balloting.

PHOENIX (AP) β€” Chicago Cubs President Theo Epstein says the club doesn’t mind if Major League Baseball wants to investigate if it tampered with Joe Maddon before hiring him as its manager. To pave the way for the hiring of Maddon, the Cubs fired Rick Renteria (rehn-tur-EE’-ah) after one year on the job. Epstein recently said that the Cubs checked with baseball to be sure Maddon was OK to talk with other clubs before negotiating with him.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL-CFP RANKING

Oregon climbs to second in latest ranking

UNDATED (AP) β€” Oregon has jumped over undefeated Florida State and into second in the College Football Playoff rankings, while TCU took over the fourth spot.

Unbeaten Mississippi State remains No. 1. The Seminoles slipped to No. 3, and Oregon moved up after trouncing Utah in Salt Lake City. Alabama is No. 5 and Arizona State is sixth.

Niners Willis done for season

UNDATED (AP) β€” The 49ers’ Patrick Willis is done for the rest of the season with a strained muscle in his left big toe that will require surgery. The seven-time Pro Bowl linebacker aggravated the injury in an Oct. 13 game against St. Louis. Willis missed the final 10 games of the regular season last year with the problem and has only played sporadically this season.

In other NFL news:

β€” Seattle defensive tackle Brandon Mebane will miss the rest of the season after suffering a hamstring injury in Sunday’s win over the Giants. Fox Sports first reported that Mebane suffered a torn hamstring. Mebane’s loss is a blow to Seattle’s run defense, which ranks fourth in the league at 79.8 yards per game.

β€” Panthers coach Ron Rivera denies that there is anything physically wrong with quarterback Cam Newton who looked off his game in Monday night’s loss to Philadelphia. Newton was sacked nine times and appeared to lack his usual mobility. Rivera has disputed published reports that Newton was injured. He says Newton, the doctors and trainers have told him they are unaware of any injury problem.

β€” The Jaguars placed rookie receiver Allen Robinson on injured reserve with a broken right foot. He initially hurt his foot against Miami on Oct. 26, and the pain kept getting worse. Tests Monday revealed a stress fracture. Robinson hasn’t decided whether or not to have surgery. He has 48 receptions for 548 yards and two touchdowns.

β€” The Chicago Bears have waived former Super Bowl MVP receiver Santonio Holmes. He signed a one-year deal with Chicago in August after being released by the New York Jets in March. He had eight receptions for 67 yards along with nine punt returns for 50 yards.

β€” The New England Patriots still top the AP’s Pro32 power rankings as voted on by a media panel that regularly covers the league. The 7-2 Patriots received seven of 12 first-place votes after enjoying a bye week. The 8-1 Arizona Cardinals received the other five first-place votes and stayed at No. 2 in the poll. The Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles and Detroit Lions round out the top 5.

Rangers blank Pens

UNDATED (AP) β€” The New York Rangers snapped out of their two-game funk by ending the Pittsburgh Penguins’ seven-game winning streak.

Rick Nash scored a short-handed goal and had two assists as the Rangers blanked the Pens 5-0. Henrik Lundqvist handled 33 shots for his third shutout of the season and 53rd of his career, extending his team record.

Mats Zuccarello (zuk-ah-REH’-loh), Martin St. Louis (mahr-TAN’ san loo-EE’) and Kevin Klein scored 6:24 apart in the first period to give the Rangers a 3-0 lead, one game after they were beaten 3-1 to visiting Edmonton.

The Pens are 10-3-1 following their first regulation loss in seven road games.

β€” Montreal was a 3-0 winner against Winnipeg as Carey Price handled 29 shots in his 1st shutout of the season and 26th of his career. Lars Eller, Alex Galchenyuk (gahl-CHEHN’-yuhk) and Tomas Plekanec (pleh-KAH’-nehts) did the scoring for the Canadiens.

β€” Jaroslav Halak (hah-LAHK’) picked up his second consecutive shutout and 150th career victory by turning back 20 shots in the New York Islanders’ 6-0 rout of Colorado. Ryan Strome (strohm) and Nikolai Kulemin (KOO’-leh-mihn) each had a goal and an assist to help the Islanders avenge their 5-0 loss to the Avalanche 10 days earlier.

β€” Jori Lehtera (YOHR’-ee LET’-ur-ah) scored a natural hat trick for the St. Louis Blues, providing the game’s first goals in a 6-1 romp over Buffalo. Joakim Lindstrom had two goals to help goaltender Brian Elliott improve to 11-0-2 lifetime against the Sabres.

β€” Nashville has a three-game winning streak after Filip Forsberg and Mike Ribeiro (rih-BEHR’-oh) each had a goal and an assist to lead the Predators past Edmonton 3-2. The Predators are 10-3-2 despite failing to score the opening goal in 10 of their 15 games.

β€” Daniel Sedin (seh-DEEN’) scored at 4:05 of overtime to complete Vancouver’s 4-3 victory against Ottawa. The Canucks squandered three leads before winning for the eighth time in 10 games.

β€” Brad Richards and Marcus Kruger scored regulation goals for Chicago before Patrick Kane’s shootout tally lifted the Blackhawks over Tampa Bay 3-2, stopping the Lightning’s six-game winning streak. The Hawks have won two straight at home since a three-game losing streak at United Center.

β€” The Blue Jackets’ losing streak has grown to nine games after Alex Ovechkin and Marcus Johansson each scored twice to lead the Capitals’ 4-2 triumph over Columbus in Washington. Nicklas Backstrom and Andre Burakovsky (bur-ah-KAHF’-skee) had two assists apiece to help the Capitals win their third straight.

β€” Tuomo Ruutu (TOH’-moh ROO’-too) and Mike Cammalleri scored second-period goals as New Jersey downed Minnesota 3-1 to end a four-game skid and hand the Wild their fourth straight loss. Cory Schneider made 23 saves after stretching his season-opening starting streak to 16 games.

β€” Dallas ended a seven-game slide as Ryan Garbutt scored a short-handed goal with 1:16 remaining to lift the Stars past Arizona 4-3. Tyler Seguin’s (SAY’-gihnz) two goals helped the Stars pick up their first victory since Oct. 24 at New Jersey.

β€” Jimmy Hayes and Aleksander Barkov scored 82 seconds apart in the first period to jumpstart Florida’s 4-1 win over San Jose. Roberto Luongo (loh-AHN’-goh) stopped 21 shots and blanked the Sharks until midway through the third period.

Perry, Beauchemin battle infection

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) β€” Right wing Corey Perry and defenseman Francois Beauchemin (fran-SWAH’ BOH’-sheh-mihn) have missed practice with the Anaheim Ducks due to a viral gland infection. They are being kept away from their teammates with the contagious condition. Both are undergoing further tests.

Perry has missed the Ducks’ last three games after falling seriously ill and requiring intravenous fluids from a local hospital last week. The former NHL MVP is still tied for the league lead with 11 goals.

Huskies top preseason poll

UNDATED (AP) β€” The two-time defending-champion Connecticut Huskies are the No. 1 team in The Associated Press women’s basketball preseason poll after receiving all 35 first-place votes. South Carolina is second, followed by 2014 finalist Notre Dame, eight-time champion Tennessee and Texas A&M. Stanford, Duke, Baylor, Texas and Maryland round out the top 10.
