CHARLOTTE, NC – Small business owners hoped to cash in on the busiest shopping weekend of the year. But does all that hype really boost the bottom line?
“It’s definitely a record breaking day for us, it’s been fantastic in here,” says small business owner Amy MacCabe. The owner of Savory Spice Shop in South End is excited to see lots of customers, even late in the day. “The dollars they put into the local businesses stay here in the community. And we have to have their support in order to exist,” MacCable says.
There are over 2700 small businesses in the Charlotte area. Owners say any extra attention Small Business Saturday can bring is a good thing.
It’s the first time Juliana Luna’s restaurant has participated in the program. “We love it. To see new faces. And people supporting local businesses,” Luna says. The owner of Luna’s Living Kitchen says it’s worth the extra time and money to shop local. “A lot of personality, that you sometimes, you miss when you go to big shops or big malls,” she says.
And small business owners also say they’re an important part of the local economy. Governor Pat McCrory released a statement saying in part — “We should be grateful for the work our small businesses do to provide employment and opportunity.”
