Florida State, Alabama, Oregon stay in playoff hunt…Fourth-ranked Mississippi State falls out
UNDATED (AP) __ Florida State is the 16th team to post back-to-back undefeated seasons since 1950 — but it wasn’t easy.
The top-ranked Seminoles, who are No. 3 in the College Football Playoff standings, escaped unranked Florida 24-19 in Will Muschamp’s final game as Gators’ coach. His Gators almost sent him out on a high note.
Florida State’s Dalvin Cook ran for a career-high 144 yards as the ‘Noles survived QB Jameis (JAYM’-ihs) Winston’s struggles. Winston threw a career-high four interceptions, including three in the first quarter. He finished 12 of 24 for 125 yards and two touchdowns.
The defending national champion Seminoles have won 28 games in a row, and completed consecutive undefeated regular seasons for the first time in school history.

β No. 2 Alabama, which sits atop the College Football Playoff standings, won the highest-scoring Iron Bowl with a come-from-behind 55-44 victory over No. 15 Auburn. Heisman Trophy hopeful Amari Cooper tied his own school record with 224 yards receiving and caught three touchdown passes. The Crimson Tide already clinched a spot in the SEC championship game next Saturday against Missouri.
β No 3 Oregon routed Oregon State 47-19. Marcus Mariota threw for 367 yards and four touchdowns and ran for 39 yards and two more scores in the 118th Civil War game. The 12-1 Ducks are headed to the Pac-12 Championship game against Arizona next Saturday. The Ducks are No. 2 in the College Football Playoff rankings.
β Fourth-ranked Mississippi State fell to No. 18 Mississippi in the Egg Bowl, 31-17. Jaylen Walton ran for a 91-yard touchdown and running back Jordan Wilkins threw a 31-yard touchdown pass. Bo Wallace threw for 296 yards despite completing just 13 of 30 passes. The loss by Mississippi State, which was ranked fourth in the College Football Playoff standings, means the Bulldogs most likely will fall out of the playoff picture.
β Bryce Petty threw for 210 yards and two touchdowns before getting knocked out of the game with a concussion and playoff hopeful fifth-ranked Baylor held off Texas Tech, 48-46. Shock Linwood ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns for the 10-1 Bears, who are guaranteed at least a share of their second consecutive conference title if they win at home over No. 11 Kansas State next Saturday.
β Ohio State won the game but lost a quarterback for next week’s Big Ten championship game against Wisconsin. Ezekiel Elliott scored on a 44-yard run on fourth-and-1 with just under five minutes left to help lift the No. 7 Buckeyes over Michigan 42-28. Ohio State improved to 11-1 and 8-0 in the Big Ten. Freshman quarterback T.J. Barrett threw for a touchdown and ran for two before the Heisman Trophy contender broke his right ankle in the fourth quarter. He will undergo surgery Sunday and will not play in next week’s Big Ten title game or a bowl. Michigan finishes 5-7 in what is likely the final game for coach Brady Hoke, who is 31-20 in four seasons.
βHarrison Butker kicked a career-long 53-yard field goal on the final play of regulation, and D.J. White picked off a pass in overtime to preserve No. 16 Georgia Tech’s 30-24 victory over No. 8 Georgia. Zach Laskey put Georgia Tech ahead with his third touchdown run of the game in overtime. Georgia fumbled twice at the Georgia Tech 1, ruining almost certain touchdown drives. The Bulldogs Damian Swann swiped the ball from a Georgia Tech player and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown.
β R.J. Shelton returned the opening kickoff 90 yards for a touchdown and Jeremy Langford ran for 118 yards and two scores in 10th-ranked Michigan State’s 34-10 victory over Penn State.
β Jake Waters threw for 294 yards and four touchdowns, two of them to record-setting wide receiver Tyler Lockett, and No. 11 Kansas State routed Kansas 51-13 to move into a tie atop the Big 12 standings. Lockett caught nine passes for 119 yards, passing his father Kevin Lockett for the K-State record in career catches.
β Melvin Gordon ran for 151 yards and accounted for two scores, and 14th-ranked Wisconsin overcame a two-touchdown deficit to beat No. 22 Minnesota 34-24. That gives the Badgers a spot in the Big Ten championship game against Ohio State.
β Artavis Scott had two long touchdown catches and Wayne Gallman ran for 191 yards to lead No. 23 Clemson over South Carolina 35-17. Scott turned two inside flip passes into touchdowns of 53 and 70 yards. Clemson improved to 9-3 with their first win over the Gamecocks in six tries.
β Brandon Radcliff ran for a 4-yard touchdown with 2:47 remaining to help No. 24 Louisville earn a 44-40 victory over Kentucky on Saturday. Safety Gerod Holliman sealed the win with his NCAA record-tying 14th interception of the season. The game between the rivals got physical before kickoff. Louisville coach Bobby Petrino grabbed the jacket of Wildcats assistant Daniel Berezowitz during one pregame scuffle.
β The 25th-ranked Boise State Broncos clinched the Mountain West Conference Mountain Division by routing Utah State 50-19. Running back Jay Ajayi (uh-JY’-hee) carried 27 times for 229 yards and five touchdowns. Boise State plays Fresno State next Saturday for the Mountain West title.

Beat goes on for Sixers
UNDATED (AP)__ Tyson Chandler had 20 points and 13 rebounds to help the Dallas Mavericks beat Philadelphia 110-103. That’s the 76ers’ franchise-record 16th straight loss to start the season.
Michael Carter-Williams had a triple-double with 18 points, 16 assists and 10 rebounds for the 76ers, who eclipsed the 1972-73 club that began 0-15. That ’72-73 team set an 82-game NBA record for fewest victories at 9-73. Philadelphia became the fifth team in league history to open with at least 16 straight losses.

β Kevin Love scored a season-high 28 points, Kyrie Irving added 24 and the Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Indiana Pacers 109-97. LeBron James added 19 points as Cleveland won its third straight game after losing four in a row and moved its record to 8-7.
β Blake Griffin scored 28 points and Chris Paul added 17 points and 10 assists as the Los Angeles Clippers beat the Utah Jazz 112-96 for their fourth straight win.
β James Harden had 19 of his game-high 34 points in the decisive third quarter and the Houston Rockets beat the Milwaukee Bucks 117-103.
β Paul Millsap scored 18 points, Mike Scott added 14 and the Atlanta Hawks handed the Charlotte Hornets their ninth straight loss, 105-75.
__ Washington edged New Orleans 83-80. Marcin Gortat (MAHR’-chin GOHR’-tot) had a double-double with 24 points and 13 boards.
NBA-RAPTORS DEROZAN OUT
Raptors’ DeRozan sidelined
TORONTO (AP) β Toronto guard DeMar DeRozan is going to be out an indefinite period with a torn tendon in his left groin. The All-Star was injured during Friday’s loss to the Dallas Mavericks. He was diagnosed with the injury Saturday.
DeRozan is averaging a team-high 19.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and a team-best 33.6 minutes in 16 games this season for the Raptors, who are off to their best start at 13-3.

Islanders back to winning ways…Sabres sweep Habs
UNDATED (AP) β On NHL ice, Jaroslav Halak (YAR’-oh-slav HAH’-lak) made 34 saves for his ninth straight win, and Cal Clutterbuck scored his third goal of the season as the New York Islanders got back to their winning ways with a 3-1 victory over the New Jersey Devils.
The 17-7 Islanders, who had a five-game winning streak snapped Friday at Washington, have won 12 of 14.
Halak has been a force, going 12-4 in his first season with the Islanders.

Cavaliers cash in at Barclays
UNDATED (AP) β Tournament MVP Justin Anderson and Anthony Gill each had 13 points to lead No. 8 Virginia to a 45-26 win over Rutgers in the championship game of the Barclays Center Classic.
Virginia is 6-0. The Cavaliers held Rutgers to just 25 percent shooting.

β Fred VanVleet scored 21 points and Ron Baker had 19 to lead No. 9 Wichita State past Tulsa 75-55. The Shockers built an 18-point first-half lead on the way to 4-0 record. James Woodard scored 16 of his 19 points in the second half for Tulsa.
β Aaron Bacote scored a career-high 31 points to lift 5-1 Old Dominion to a 73-67 win over No. 14 Virginia Commonwealth. Bacote has only scored 20 points in five previous games. Treveon Graham scored 34 to lead the Rams who fell to 4-2 this season.
β Caris LeVert scored 19 of his 24 points in the first half as No. 19 Michigan bounced back from its first loss of the season with a 91-62 victory over winless Nicholls State. The Wolverines improved to 5-1.
__ Jonathan Holton scored a career-high 21 points, leading No. 21 West Virginia to an 86-57 win over the College of Charleston. West Virginia is 7-0, its best start since going 11-0 in the 2009-10 season when it reached the Final Four.
β Austin Chatman and Isaiah Zierden each scored 10 points to help No. 23 Creighton (KRAY’-tuhn) beat Middle Tennessee 57-47 and finish third in the inaugural Emerald Coast Classic.
NFL-DOLPHINS INJURIES
Dolphins hurting in the secondary
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) β Cornerback Jamar Taylor has been ruled out of the Miami Dolphins’ game Monday at the New York Jets, and cornerback Cortland Finnegan is doubtful, leaving the team thin in the secondary.
Taylor separated his left shoulder last week, and Finnegan has been nursing a left ankle injury. If Finnegan can’t play, he’ll likely be replaced by Jimmy Wilson.
GOLF-AUSTRALIAN OPEN
Spieth captures title Down Under
SYDNEY (AP) β Jordan Spieth (SPEETH) made his first trip Down Under a successful one, shooting an 8-under 63 on Sunday to win the Australian Open by six strokes.
Spieth’s four-round total of 13-under 271 made him the first American to win the Australian Open since Brad Faxon in 1993.

Norwegian wins season opener
LAKE LOUISE, Alberta (AP) β Norway’s Kjetil Jansrud (YANS’-rood)won the season-opening men’s World Cup downhill Saturday. The Olympic super-G champion finished in 1 minute, 50.20 seconds.
Marco Sullivan was the top American, finishing fifth in 1:50.68. Travis Ganong was 11th, Steven Nyman 16th, and Wiley Maple 22nd.
A super-G is set for today.
