CHARLOTTE, NC – A call for unity among the Mecklenburg Board of County Commissioners after a drama-filled night at the Government Center on Monday.
“Put aside all of the stuff over the last few months and let’s move forward. It’s a new day; we’re about to enter a new year,” said said Trevor Fuller, the board chair.
Fuller says he wants board members to work together. He opened up Tuesday night’s meeting defending the board’s reputation.
“The personal relationships that we have among each other are far different than the depiction that’s made of us publicly,” said Fuller.
Fuller’s request comes 24 hours after a controversial vote. Five of six Democrats and three Republicans elected Fuller as chair, although he was the third highest vote getter in November’s election.
Traditionally, the board would appoint Pat Cotham as chair because she got the most votes.
“If others choose to bicker and bully, then I can’t change that,” said Cotham.
Cotham served as board chair in 2012. In 2013, commissioners ousted her for the way she handled the firing of County Manager Harry Jones.
“I’m going to continue to do everything I can to be a professional, but we’ll see. Some may struggle more than others,” said Cotham.
