UNION COUNTY, NC — We’re learning more about a corrections sergeant who died after crashing his car in Union County.
The Highway Patrol says speed and alcohol may have played a role. Β 61-year-old William Womack, Jr. hit a stone and brick sign on Weddington Road early Tuesday morning. Β
Womack worked at the Lanesboro Correctional Institution in Anson County. Β Neighbor Troy Pruitt says he heard the crash and tried to help.
“I was just praying,” said Pruitt. Β “I was praying that the person in that car would survive the accident, but unfortunately, he did not.”
Investigators say Womack was going more than 100 miles per hour. Β They say he was wearing a seat belt.
