WILMINGTON / GREENSBORO, NC — A report that fish caught from a lake near a Duke Energy coal ash spill are unsafe to eat may not be true.

The Southern Environmental Law Center released the study Monday, saying fish from Sutton Lake near Wilmington had higher than allowed levels of selenium.  The group quickly retracted the study, after Duke questioned how the levels were measured.

Governor Pat McCrory talked about efforts to clean up Duke’s coal ash dumps Monday in Greensboro.  “What we need to do is take the politics out of it and allow the scientists and engineers to determine how to best move coal ash, as opposed to the politicians,” said McCrory.

A committee looking at ways to safely recycle 108 million tons of Duke’s coal ash stored in dumps across the state will report its findings next month.
