UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Police say school bus driver Timothy McManus of Indian Trail was killed in an accident Monday afternoon. The wreck happened on New Town Road in Wesley Chapel around 3pm. Β
Investigators say Union County School’s bus 334 was hit by a garbage truck after the garbage truck driver crossed the center line.
No students were on the bus at the time of the accident. Β The bus was headed to Central Academy of Technology and Arts. Β The driver has been working for the school system for three years. Β
“The neighborhood is really upset, because we know that the last children that stepped off that bus were our kids,” said Wesley Chapel resident Tina Tugwell. Β “Obviously, we have lots of people connected with the school in the area, so I’m sure many of our residents knew the bus driver.”
The garbage truck driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, but is expected to be okay. Β He’s charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle.
