WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Kay Hagan said goodbye Friday night to fellow Senators and supporters. Β She was defeated in the November midterm elections by Republican and former North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis.
The campaign battle between Hagan and Tillis topped $100 million, making it the most expensive U.S. Senate race ever. Β Senator Hagan teared up as she looked back on her time in office.
“Six years ago, North Carolinians gave me the opportunity to be a voice in Washington,” she said. Β “And I’ve put North Carolinians first every single day. Β And I urge my colleagues to do the same and remember who you’re fighting for, not fighting against.”
Senator-Elect Tillis will be sworn in January 6. Β He is one of nine freshman Republican Senators.
