WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. Senator Kay Hagan said goodbye Friday night to fellow Senators and supporters. She was defeated in the November midterm elections by Republican and former North Carolina House Speaker Thom Tillis.
The campaign battle between Hagan and Tillis topped $100 million, making it the most expensive U.S. Senate race ever. Senator Hagan teared up as she looked back on her time in office.
“Six years ago, North Carolinians gave me the opportunity to be a voice in Washington,” she said. “And I’ve put North Carolinians first every single day. And I urge my colleagues to do the same and remember who you’re fighting for, not fighting against.”
Senator-Elect Tillis will be sworn in January 6. He is one of nine freshman Republican Senators.
