Mariota favored to take Heisman
NEW YORK (AP) β Oregon’s Marcus Mariota (mar-ee-OH’-tah) has come away with the Heisman Trophy as college football’s top player, beating out Wisconsin running back Melvin Gordon and Alabama receiver Amari Cooper
The Ducks’ quarterback set a Pac-12 mark this season with 53 total touchdowns, including a school-record 38 via pass, 14 keepers and one TD reception. He leads the nation with 10 games of four or more touchdowns this season. His 38 touchdown passes are also an Oregon record. He’s helped Oregon to a 12-1 record and a shot at defending national champ Florida State in the Rose Bowl as part of the College Football Playoff.
Mariota had already captured the Walter Camp National Player of the Year Award, the Maxwell Award as college player of the year, the Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award and the Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award.
Gordon claimed the Doak Walter Award as the nation’s top running back after setting a Big Ten single-season record with 2,336 rushing yards and scoring 29 touchdowns.
Cooper had 1,656 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns while setting a Southeastern Conference record with 115 receptions. That helped him claim the Fred Biletnikoff Award as the nation’s outstanding receiver.

Kentucky knocks off North Carolina
UNDATED (AP) β The Kentucky Wildcats were the unanimous No. 1 team in men’s basketball at the start of the week, and there’s no reason for their status to change following a convincing win over No. 21 North Carolina.
Devin Booker and Willie Cauley-Stein each had 15 points as the Wildcats whipped the Tar Heels 84-70 to improve to 11-0. Kentucky shot 57 percent from the field, with Booker going 5-for-8 overall and 3-for-3 from 3-point range.
The Wildcats never trailed and eventually built a 19-point, second-half lead in their first game since junior forward Alex Poythress suffered a season-ending knee injury.
In other top-25 action:
β Third-ranked Arizona crushed Michigan 80-53 as Stanley Johnson scored 17 points and Gabe York added 15 for the 10-0 Wildcats. The Wildcats outscored the Wolverines 42-16 in the paint and grabbed 14 more rebounds for their 28th consecutive home win.
β Fifth-ranked Wisconsin is 10-1 after Sam Dekker scored 17 points and Josh Gasser added 14 in the Badgers’ 86-43 rout of Nicholls State. Dekker also had five rebounds, three assists and two blocks for the Badgers, who shot 70 percent in the first half and raced out to a 37-6 lead.
β No. 10 Kansas blew a 21-point lead before Perry Ellis supplied a tiebreaking basket to put the Jayhawks ahead 57-55 in a 63-60 triumph over No. 13 Utah. Ellis delivered 14 points, Jamari Traylor added 13 and Frank Mason III had 10 for the 8-1 Jayhawks.
β Darius Carter had 18 points and 11 rebounds as 11th-rated Wichita State downed Detroit 77-68. Ron Baker had a team-high 19 points for the Shockers, who trailed by 10 in the second half before going on a 15-3 run.
β No. 12 Ohio State hammered Morehead State 87-71 as D’Angelo Russell and Sam Thompson each scored 15 points in the win for the 8-1 Buckeyes. Thad Matta was a winner in his 500th game as head coach, improving to 385-115.
β TaShawn Thomas contributed 25 points and five rebounds to lead No. 16 Oklahoma past Tulsa 87-68. Isaiah Cousins added 21 points, including five 3-pointers.
β Freshman Melo Trimble earned his first double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds as 19th-rated Maryland barely beat South Carolina-Upstate 67-57. Jake Layman added 17 points for the 10-1 Terps and helped his team erase a four-point deficit.

Navy beats Army
BALTIMORE (AP) β Make it 13 straight wins for Navy over Army in college football.
Quarterback Keenan Reynolds ran for 100 yards on 26 carries and threw a touchdown pass as the Middies downed the Cadets 17-10. Navy led 10-7 before Reynolds scored from the 1 with 12:07 left.
Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo (nee-uh-mah-tuh-LOHL’-loh) became the all-time winningest coach in Navy history, picking up his 56 to break a tie with George Walsh.

Warriors win again
UNDATED (AP) β The Golden State Warriors have become the 12th team in NBA history to open a season 20-2, thanks to their current 15-game winning streak.
The Warriors extended the club-record winning streak on Saturday as Stephen (STEF’-ihn) Curry scored 29 points and Klay Thompson added 25 in a 105-98 triumph at Dallas. Curry and Klay Thompson each scored 17 in the first half as Golden State ran out to a 28-point lead.
The Warriors are 4-0 on a six-game road trip that takes them to New Orleans on Sunday.

Sens coach gets first NHL win
UNDATED (AP) β The Ottawa Senators got Dave Cameron his first victory as an NHL head coach, but they needed more than 65 minutes before they did it.
Mikka Zibanjad (MEE’-kuh zih-BAN-ih-jad) scored once in regulation and again in the shootout as the Senators topped the Bruins 3-2 in Boston. The Bruins led 2-1 until David Legwand scored on a power play early in the third period.
The Senators are 1-1 since Cameron took over for Paul MacLean on Monday.
The Bruins have dropped five of six.

New kicker for Browns
UNDATED (AP) β Injured kicker Billy Cundiff is out of work. He’s been waived by the Cleveland Browns and replaced by Garrett Hartley, who kicked for the Saints between 2008 and 2013.

β The Chicago Bears have placed linebacker Darryl Sharpton on injured reserve because of a hamstring injury. Sharpton had 27 tackles in five games for the Bears this season.

NAPLES, Fla. (AP) β The team of Jason Day and Cameron Tringale held on to win the Franklin Templeton Shootout in Naples, Florida. They completed the three round tournament at 32-under-par, one shot in front of the team consisting of defending champs Harris English and Matt Kuchar (KOO’-chur), who just missed an eagle chip on the final hole.
