DIGITAL BILLBOARD-ATHEISTS

Atheist group and church advertise on Arkansas billboard

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) β€” A digital billboard in northwest Arkansas is flashing alternating ads by a church and an atheist group.

The billboard along Interstate 49 in Springdale has been showing an ad sponsored by the group American Atheists. It shows a young girl writing Santa Claus that all she wants for the holidays is to miss church, because she’s too old for fairy tales.

The ad is part of a campaign to promote the atheist group’s national convention, which will be held over the Easter weekend in Memphis, Tennessee.

The atheist ad inspired a response by Grace Church in Alma, Arkansas. Executive Pastor Devon Walker says the congregation raised about $900 to pay for its own message to appear about 16 seconds later on the same digital billboard for the two weeks before Christmas.

The church’s ad reads, “Questions, Doubts, Curiosity? All Welcome at Grace Church, Alma.”

ISRAEL-PALESTINIANS

Israel indicts 3 Jews in Jerusalem school arson

JERUSALEM (AP) β€” Israel has indicted three members of a Jewish extremist group for setting fire to a bi-lingual school in Jerusalem where Jews and Arabs study together.

Monday’s indictment accuses Yitzhak Gabai of Jerusalem and Shlomo and Nachman Twito, both of the ultra-orthodox West Bank settlement Beitar Ilit, of setting fire to the school late last month and writing racist slogans on its walls.

Prosecutors say the three are members of “Lehava,” a group opposed to Jewish assimilation and co-existence between Jews and Arabs.

Mosques, churches, dovish Israeli groups and even Israeli military bases have been targeted by vandals in recent years. The acts have been condemned by Israeli leaders across the political spectrum.

The attack on the school came amid rising tensions in Jerusalem, mostly over a disputed holy site.

CHICAGO ARCHBISHOP-SCHOOL CLOSINGS

Chicago archbishop won’t halt school closures

CHICAGO (AP) β€” Chicago’s new archbishop says he will not reconsider his predecessor’s decision to close nine Catholic schools.

Archbishop Blase Cupich (blayz SOO’-pich) said Sunday that the archdiocese instead must move forward to strengthen the archdiocese’s schools.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Cupich spoke after celebrating Mass at St. Hyacinth Basilica, whose school is among those that will close despite a campaign by students, parents and educators to reverse the decision.

Former Cardinal Francis George announced in October that nine schools would close because of rising costs and declining enrollment. Cupich was elevated to archbishop when George retired in November.

Cupich said he was assured that all affected children could attend another Catholic school. He also said George made the decision after extensive deliberation.

PRIEST-CHARITY THEFT

Michigan priest sentenced in charity theft

DETROIT (AP) β€” A Detroit-area Catholic priest will spend two months in jail each calendar year for the next five years for stealing money from a charity for the poor.

Wayne County Circuit Judge Bruce Morrow’s sentence calls for the Rev. Timothy Kane to be jailed during the months of December and June. Another eight weeks will be determined by probation officials.

Kane also was sentenced Monday to five years’ probation and restitution of $131,400. He was ordered to report Tuesday to the Wayne County Jail.

A jury found Kane guilty in October of crimes including embezzlement from the Angel Fund, an Archdiocese of Detroit charity created to help people in need. The 58-year-old priest denied the charges and said he wrongly signed a confession to police.

A woman who authorities say conspired with Kane was sentenced in October to five years of probation and a $5,000 fine.

VATICAN-US-GUANTANAMO

Vatican presses US on Guantanamo inmate treatment

VATICAN CITY (AP) β€” The Vatican is asking the U.S. to find an “adequate humanitarian solution” for prisoners held at the Guantanamo Bay detention center, a reflection of Pope Francis’ vocal concern that prisoners be treated with dignity and not be subjected to inhumane treatment.

The Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, made the request Monday during a Vatican meeting with Secretary of State John Kerry.

A senior U.S. State Department official, who wasn’t authorized to speak publicly about the matter and demanded anonymity, said Kerry “described recent progress in our diplomatic efforts to transfer detainees to third countries, including to Uruguay.”

HALAL FOODS-INVESTIGATION

US says halal food supplier misled Muslims on beef

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa (AP) β€” Federal prosecutors say a food supplier falsely marketed beef to Muslims around the world for several years.

A fraud indictment alleges that Midamar Corp. exported products that weren’t slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law while claiming that they met strict halal standards.

The grand jury indictment says Midamar, based in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, sold at least $4.9 million in beef to customers in Malaysia, Kuwait, United Arab Emirates and elsewhere that did not follow the halal practices promised in its labeling and advertising. Also indicted is another company controlled by Midamar’s owners, Islamic Services of America.

Midamar issued a statement saying it’s unconstitutional for the government to judge religious food practices. The company said its slaughter methods have been vetted by halal auditors during its 40-year history and the “company continues to maintain its high level of halal integrity.”

ROSWELL CHURCH FIRE

Fire heavily damages church in Roswell

ROSWELL, Ga. (AP) β€” Authorities are searching for the cause of a fire that heavily damaged a church in Roswell, Georgia, just north of Atlanta.

Firefighters responded to the blaze at the Epiphany Byzantine Catholic Church around 2 a.m. Sunday. They said that parts of the church, and parts of the woods surrounding the building, were in flames when firefighters arrived.

WSB-TV reports that agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives were at the scene investigating over the weekend.

Roswell police spokeswoman Lisa Holland said a man was taken into custody near the scene and charged with disorderly conduct that was unrelated to the cause of the fire.

CHURCH-FATAL ACCIDENT

Woman run over by husband’s car in church lot dies

WEST ORANGE, N.J. (AP) β€” Authorities say a woman has been run over and killed by a car her husband was driving in a New Jersey church parking lot.

Acting Essex County Prosecutor Carolyn Murray says 71-year-old Eun Park was struck Sunday night at Antioch Presbyterian Church in West Orange.

The Randolph resident was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after the accident.

Authorities say no immediate charges were filed, but the investigation is ongoing.

WOMAN PINNED-CHURCH

Police: Nebraska woman pinned against church

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. (AP) β€” Police say a Nebraska woman was injured after her son accidently pinned her against a church with their family’s truck.

The Grand Island Independent reports that 43-year-old Maria Atjun was taken to an area hospital Sunday night and released. Sgt. Todd Dvorak says she suffered injuries to her legs and torso.

Dvorak says her 13-year-old sun started the truck while it was in gear and it drove forward, pinning Atjun. He says people at the church pushed the truck off of the woman before first responders arrived.

GERMANY-ANTI-ISLAM RALLIES

German gov’t wants ‘open’ debate about immigration

BERLIN (AP) β€” The German government says it’s open to a debate about immigration, but adds that there’s no place in the country for those who incite hatred against religious or ethnic minorities.

Anti-Islam rallies in German cities have been growing in recent weeks. Members of Germany’s far right have been among the thousands of protesters.

Government spokesman Steffen Seibert told reporters Monday that those demonstrating should “think about who they are joining up with and who they are being used by.”

But in light of a sharp increase in asylum requests this year, especially by Syrian refugees, Seibert said the issue of immigration “is so important that there needs to be a serious and open and also very nuanced debate.”
