CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte celebrated the start of Hanukkah Tuesday night with the lighting of a giant Menorah at Southpark Mall. The Menorah is inside at the Circle Court.
Hanukkah is the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights. Toys, clothes and food collected Tuesday night will be donated to charity, but the main focus was on the Menorah, and what it symbolizes.
“Hanukkah, we kindle the light which symbolizes the light of the Spirit, and we allow it to shine, brighten and illuminate the darkness of the world,” said Rabbi Yossi Groner of Congregation Ohr HaTorah.
In Judaism, the Menorah is a symbol of God’s miracles for those who stand up for truth and justice.
